Work-in-Progress
The Maria Trilogy is a speculative, three part interactive, multimedia project that will use audio, video and VR to explore the emotional and material lives of five generations of women in the artist’s family from the 1800’s Caribbean to the 21st century United States.
Part One: The Healing Box, 2026
The Healing Box is the first part of a speculative, interactive multimedia project that explores the concept of healing as a form of liberation. It does this by subverting an idea from the science fiction novel and film, Dune. In that story, a matriarchal order uses “The Box” to cause the sensation of pain with the goal of teaching adherents to control their instincts to raise their awareness. The Healing Box subverts this methodology by introducing an interactive matrilineal “truncated octahedron” that centers healing to raise awareness. Participants interact with the “box” by placing their hand inside of it, activating a multicolored light display and a series of sound designed, audio montages. The audio montages will transmit the experiences of five generations of women from the artist’s family, from the 1800s Caribbean to the 21st century United States, by recounting their stories of sickness and healing in societies that have pushed their well-being to the margins.
This project has been made possible via grants from The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation and the Leeway Foundation.
